DO
- Come prepared and chronicle when, how often and how severe your symptoms are before your visit.
- Be assertive. Doctors have an obligation to discuss your concerns with you.
- Keep up to date on new studies and re-search—especially if you suffer from a chronic condition. It’s possible you’ll come across something your doctor hasn't.
- Write down a summary of everything your physician tells you as he or she is saying it. You can review your notes later to re-fresh your memory.
DON’T
- Approach your doctor with an idea of what you think you have. Tell him or her your symptoms first—focus on reporting instead of diagnosing.
- Go on the offensive. If your doctor is open to a discussion, it’ll be better for the relationship.
- Put much stock in extravagant alternative health-care claims. Check with your doctor about the validity behind “miracle cures.”
- Leave the office until you know when you are expected to return—and what you should watch for that might bring you in sooner.
